Hope for trauma survivors
Construction of the National PTSD Research Centre has commenced at UniSC’s Thompson Institute.
The first of its kind in Australia and based on international models that have had phenomenal success rates, our Centre will:
- Deliver breakthrough research into the causes, impacts and treatments of PTSD
- Develop pharmaceutical and therapeutic interventions
- Establish Australia’s first PTSD brain bank, allowing research into brain chemistry and structure
- Provide clinical services for PTSD sufferers
- Advocate and educate for better support of PTSD patients
The Centre is a continuation of the Thompson Institute’s unique model of integrating research, education, clinical services and advocacy. This supports the fast translation of research into practice.

A national Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Centre will be established at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Thompson Institute, following the allocation of $12.2 million to the Institute in last night’s Federal Budget.
Construction project updates
Construction of the world-class National PTSD Research Centre at UniSC’s Thompson Institute is progressing.
The centre is exciting news for the Sunshine Coast and will provide vital services to the community, but it will come with some disruptions.
Our important mental health research, clinical services and education will continue however and we’ll work with the community to make involvement in our programs as easy as possible.
Parking
Parking onsite at the Thompson Institute is limited throughout the construction period.
If you are visiting us please allow extra time to find street parking, should our onsite visitor parking already be full.
We are constructing a temporary carpark on Innovation Parkway for our visitors, staff and students.
Noise and vibrations
For the most part, we expect construction noise to be manageable. But there will be certain points in the project that noise and vibrations will reach levels that require us to reschedule appointments. We will do this with us much notice as possible.
