Successful completion of UniSC's English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs, with the required passing grade, meets English language requirements to study for most undergraduate or postgraduate degrees.

UniSC offers programs taught by experienced TESOL-qualified English language teachers on our USC Sunshine Coast campus.

UniSC offers four levels of English for Academic Purposes programs, from pre intermediate to advanced. Find out more information about the classes, entry pathways and program structure below.

English for Academic Purposes EAP F - Pre Intermediate

UniSC's academic English pre intermediate programs are excellent preparation for further English language studies.

Our pre intermediate programs offer:

  • skills for writing paragraphs and short essays
  • skills for short oral presentations
  • assessment including a basic research report, listening and reading tests
  • use of University facilities and resources
  • IELTS Exam preparation
  • a certificate on course completion (if satisfactorily attended)

Successful completion will allow you to progress to intermediate English language programs (EAP 1).

The pre intermediate level programs are 10-week, full-time (25 hours per week) courses (250 hours in total).

English for Academic Purposes EAP 1 - Intermediate

UniSC's academic English intermediate programs are excellent preparation for further English language studies.

Our intermediate programs offer:

  • skills to participate in seminars and lectures
  • essay writing
  • assessment includes assignments, reading and listening tests and an oral presentation
  • use of University facilities and resources
  • IELTS exam preparation
  • a certificate on course completion (if satisfactorily attended)

Successful completion will allow you to progress to upper intermediate English language programs (EAP 2).

The intermediate level programs are 10-week, full-time (25 hours per week) courses (250 hours in total).

English for Academic Purposes EAP 2 - Upper intermediate

UniSC's academic English upper intermediate programs are excellent preparation for most UniSC degree programs.

Our upper intermediate programs offer:

  • academic skills and study strategies
  • university style assessment items
  • assignments, reading and listening tests and an oral presentation
  • use of USC facilities and resources
  • opportunities to experience a variety of lectures at UniSC
  • IELTS Exam preparation
  • a certificate on course completion (if satisfactorily attended)

Successful completion at the required level will allow you to progress to advanced English language programs (EAP 3) and will satisfy the minimum English language requirement for entry into most undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and some programs which have non standard English language requirements. Refer to our English language requirements for further information.

The upper intermediate programs are 10-week, full-time (25 hours per week) courses (250 hours in total).

English for Academic Purposes EAP 3 - Advanced

UniSC’s academic English advanced programs are excellent preparation for postgraduate programs or professional work placements.

Our advanced programs offer:

  • academic skills consolidation

  • university style assessment items

  • use of USC facilities and resources

  • opportunities to experience real-life lectures at UniSC

  • seminars and tutorials for speaking practice and oral presentations

  • IELTS Exam preparation and strategies for success

  • consideration of individual study pathways

  • blended and collaborative learning opportunities

  • a certificate on course completion (if satisfactorily attended)

Successful completion at the required level will satisfy the minimum English language requirement for entry into most undergraduate, postgraduate programs and some programs which have higher English language requirements than standard programs. Each English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program runs for a total number of 10 weeks (20 hours per week, 200 hours total).

All programs are offered in face to face.

English Language Programs Entry requirements
English for Academic Purposes EAP F One of the following (or equivalent as approved by USC International on a case-by-case basis):
  • Overall Academic IELTS score of 4.5 (with minimum of 4.5 in each subtest), or
  • TOEFL (paper based) 485 TWE 3, or
  • TOEFL iBT 55 (with minimum score of 13 for writing), or
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) 36 (with no communicative score less than 36)
English for Academic Purposes EAP 1 One of the following (or equivalent as approved by USC International on a case-by-case basis):
  • Successful completion of EAP F, or
  • Overall Academic IELTS score of 5.0 (with minimum of 5.0 in each subtest), or
  • TOEFL (paper based) 500 TWE 3, or
  • TOEFL iBT 60 (with minimum score of 15 for writing), or
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) 36 (with no communicative score less than 36)
English for Academic Purposes EAP 2

Where EAP 2 is intended to be used to meet standard English language requirements for most undergraduate programs:

One of the following (or equivalent as approved by USC International on a case-by-case basis)*:

  • Successful completion of EAP 1, or
  • Overall Academic IELTS score of 5.5 (with minimum of 5.0 in each subtest), or
  • TOEFL (paper based) 525 TWE 3, or
  • TOEFL iBT 70 (with minimum score of 15 for writing), or
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) 42 (with no communicative score less than 36)

Where EAP 2 is intended to be used to meet standard English language requirements for most postgraduate coursework programs:

One of the following (or equivalent as approved by USC International on a case-by-case basis)*:

  • Successful completion of EAP 1, or
  • Overall Academic IELTS score of 6.0 (with minimum of 6.0 in each subtest), or
  • TOEFL (paper based) 550 TWE 4, or
  • TOEFL iBT 76 (with minimum score of 21 for writing), or
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) 50 (with no communicative score less than 50)

*Where EAP2 is used to progress into EAP3, different entry requirements will apply.

English for Academic Purposes EAP 3

Where EAP 3 is intended to be used to meet standard English language requirements:

One of the following (or equivalent as approved by USC International on a case-by-case basis):

  • Successful completion of EAP 2, or
  • Overall Academic IELTS score of 6.5 (with a minimum score of 6 in each subtest), or
  • TOEFL (paper based) 575 TWE 4, or
  • TOEFL iBT 85 (with minimum score of 21 for writing), or
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) 58 (with no communicative score less than 50)

All students are required to complete a comprehensive level test on arrival at USC, even if English test results have been supplied.

Notes
  1. Tuition fees are reviewed each calendar year. The fee you must pay for a given teaching block is that which has been approved by UniSC for the calendar year in which the teaching block commences.
  2. Any increase in tuition fees from one calendar year to the next will be no more than 7 percent.
  3. All prices quoted are in Australian Dollars (A$).
  4. Tuition fees quoted do not include visa application fees.

Applying to UniSC is easy! Simply follow the steps at How to apply.

  • If you would like assistance with the application process you may like to apply via a UniSC representative
  • Depending on the program you apply for, a pre-departure test may be required
  • There is no application deadline for English Language Programs
  • For programs commencing in 2021 and 2022, UniSC will waive the application fee of A$260

Prior to applying, make sure you have:

International students commencing in the EAP program in 2023 will automatically receive the International Student Scholarship, meaning:

  • 15% off your entire EAP program, AND
  • 15% off your entire UniSC program (eg Bachelor or Master)
