Mental Health and Wellbeing; a whole-of-university approach

Open until position filled

In examining and establishing a whole-of-university approach to mental health and wellbeing, this project will blend a systematic review of current approaches with a mixed-methods evaluation of co-designed strategies to positively support mental health and wellbeing across the university community. The successful applicant will be involved across the project lifespan, from conception and participant recruitment through to the co-design and evaluation of mental health and wellbeing strategies (including embedding content within the curriculum), developing a wide range of research skills set in mental health, wellbeing, and education, and designing a framework for a coordinated, proactive whole-of-university approach to positively support mental health and wellbeing across the university community.

University student wellbeing is an established concern across the sector, being recognised as a key determinant of student success and engagement. Despite this, mental health disorders remain prevalent amongst university students, with a reported 65% of Australian tertiary students experiencing high or very-high levels of psychological distress, whilst 35% have experienced thoughts of self-harm or suicide. The wellbeing of university staff is also a growing sector-wide concern, where work-related stress, burnout, and mental health difficulties negatively impact staff productivity, including impacting their capacity to support students. Established social, academic, and financial factors contributing to both student and staff distress have been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, heightening the requirement for a coordinated, proactive ‘whole of university’ approach to positively support mental health and wellbeing across the university community.

The ideal candidate will possess an Honours or Masters’ degree in a related area, have a working knowledge of the university wellbeing sector, and preferably have a relevant track record in research and publishing. This outstanding opportunity would suit a highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic, a willingness to continually learn and grow, and the ability to work effectively independently and as part of a cross-disciplinary team. Excellent attention to detail, demonstrated organisational skills and record-keeping skills, and a passion for individual health and wellbeing are highly desirable. Individuals residing in regional Australia are encouraged to apply.
