All managers have to exercise leadership if they are to be fully effective at work. This aim of this course is for class members to have a sound understanding of the nature of leadership including the main conceptual frameworks and theories that underpin managerial practice. The course commences with an overview of the environment and nature of leadership and then describes the key theories and models of leadership that have been proposed over the past century, with emphasis on those of greatest relevance today. Next, the course explores the relevance of emotional intelligence and personality to leadership. Then leadership is analysed in terms of power and politics and group dynamics. Finally, we examine the need for strategic leadership in organisations.
