Understanding the timetable

Class timetables are released as early as possible to let you plan your studies.

It's important that you select your courses early, for the full academic year, so we know how many students need class spaces in each course. Check the key enrolment dates in the academic calendar.

You can use the timetable planner for viewing and planning but note, the timetable is subject to change. You aren't guaranteed a place in any class until you enrol in your courses and classes through USC Central.

When planning your enrolment, take note of the location of the course and delivery mode of the class - some courses are available at multiple campuses or may be delivered online. Also hover over the information icon on the left of each class listing to check if there are any restrictions on class selections.

Delivery modes

Students have the opportunity to study a range of courses through flexible delivery options from on-campus to online, either full or part-time.

Class components refer to the class types you attend as part of your course. For example, you may need to select a Lecture, Tutorial/Workshop and Laboratory as part of one course.

On-campus (blended learning)

On-campus, or blended learning, means you’ll attend class components on-campus. These might be regular, for example, to participate in weekly laboratory sessions or it can be irregular on-campus components such as to attend a single assessment activity.

Once the class timetable is released for viewing and planning, you can confirm if a class is offered on-campus if it has a day, time and room allocated to it. When class selection opens, you can add it to your enrolment through USC Central.

On-campus learning is where a course is delivered to take advantage of a blend of educational technologies, virtual environments and teaching in physical spaces. The mix of activities between on-campus and delivery via web-based technologies will vary from course to course. For example, some courses may have an online lecture and an on-campus tutorial or laboratory, or some may include irregular on-campus components such as to attend a single assessment activity with the rest of the course content delivered online.

Online learning

Online learning means there is no requirement for you to attend a USC campus for this class. Depending on the course, your online learning may be timetabled and delivered at that time via online technologies, such as Zoom, or it may be completed at any time as self-directed online learning.

Once the class timetable is released for viewing and planning, you can confirm if an online class is timetabled if it has day and time allocated to it. The room will state ‘online’ with the campus initials eg ONLINEFC. When class selection opens, you can add it to your enrolment through USC Central.

If there is no day or time allocated to the class, this will be delivered online with the content worked through as self-directed online learning. When class selection opens, you do not need to select a class time for this component.

Your online class may be delivered via recorded audio or video lectures, short video captures, set readings each week, questions posted in a discussion forum and/or an online quiz or other learning activities.

Block-mode learning

Block-mode learning refers to a course that is blended or online and is completed intensively over a short period of time. How often a student is on campus will depend on the course. Blocks of learning can vary from completing one course at a time or a number at a time during an intensive time period.
