Work practicum opportunities

In today’s workplace, employers are looking for graduates with work experience who can quickly play a significant role and help the organisation achieve its objectives. Undertaking a work practicum as part of your UniSC degree helps you prepare to meet these expectations.

Students enrolled in a Master of Health Promotion will need to complete at least 1 workplace practicum. For students enrolled on-campus you will need to complete PUB715. On-campus students then have the option to do a second workplace practicum, PUB716, as an elective and if places are available. Online students need to complete PUB716.

Overview of the placement courses

PUB715 is an on-campus placement, where students work in small groups to complete a project task for a local organisation. The placement is supervised in weekly workshops by the course coordinator and students then allocate independent work time to progress their project, hence in a ‘virtual’ workplace. Students will still participate in host organisation meetings in person or by phone/skype. The workplace learning experience are aligned to International Health Promotion competencies.

PUB716 placements are based with external organisations and give students the opportunity to gain valuable experience prior to completing their studies and seeking employment in the field. The workplace learning experience, including projects and tasks asked of students, are aligned to International Health Promotion competencies. Students complete a minimum of 75 hours of practical experience with a relevant organisation. Organisations may include government (eg. Queensland Health, local council), non-government (eg. Heart Foundation), academic (eg. Research and consultant organisations) or charity-based (eg. Red Cross). In addition to locally based placements, there are opportunities for rural and remote placements in Australia, as well as interstate and overseas options.

Placement essentials (Mandatory Checks)

To be eligible to commence placement, both PUB715 and PUB716, students must complete the following Mandatory checks

NOTE: some of the mandatory checks can take quite some time to organise and students are advised to commence working on obtaining their specific mandatories as soon as they have accepted their offer.

All documentation will need to be uploaded to your Sonia Online* account before you begin your practicum. Additional mandatory information will be provided to you during your program.

Remuneration and insurance

Please note that no remuneration or payment is made by the organisations to the students or to the University for hosting a student on work placement. Students undertaking an approved placement are covered by the University’s insurance policies.

How to apply

Students are required to submit an expression of interest for work placement. Please note that organising the projects for placement takes time. Students need to submit an expression of interest form well in advance of the beginning of the Semester or Session.
