Health Science and Health Promotion - Work Practicums

Work practicum opportunities

In today’s workplace, employers are looking for graduates with work experience who can quickly play a significant role and help the organisation achieve its objectives. Undertaking a work practicum as part of your UniSC degree helps you prepare to meet these expectations.

Undergraduate students enrolled in one of the following programs will need to complete a workplace practicum (PUB305 Public Health Practicum).

  • Bachelor of Health Science (Applied Health Promotion)
  • Bachelor of Health Science (Epidemiology and Public Health)
  • Bachelor of Health Science (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health)
  • Bachelor of Health Science (Health Communication)
  • Bachelor of Health Science (Environmental Health)
  • Bachelor of Health Promotion
  • Bachelor of Nutrition

Overview of PUB305 Public Health Practicum

PUB305, Public Health Practicum, is an opportunity to develop and apply the required knowledge, skills and competencies in your health-related discipline. The course is designed to fit two streams: Stream 1 (Environmental Health) and Stream 2 (Health Promotion, Health Communication, Epidemiology and Public Health, Indigenous Health and Wellbeing). At the completion of your practicum (either Stream 1 or Stream 2) you will be able to demonstrate well developed professional judgement and responsibilities in the workplace context, incorporating ethical and professional behaviour. PUB305 is currently offered in Session 4 and Semester 2.

Work practicums are best completed at the end of your program. This enables you as a student to be the most prepared you can be, ready to apply your learned theory and skills in your area of health science. The more you know, the better you can perform in the workplace and impress your host organization!

Placement essentials (Mandatory Checks)

To be eligible to commence placement, students must complete the following Mandatory Checks.

NOTE: some of the mandatory checks can take quite some time to organise and students are advised to commence working on obtaining their specific mandatories as soon as they have accepted their offer.

All documentation will need to be uploaded to your Sonia Online account before you begin your practicum. Additional mandatory information will be provided to you during your program.

*Access to Sonia Online available to enrolled students only

Remuneration and insurance

Please note that no remuneration or payment is made by the organisations to the students or to the University for hosting a student on work placement. Students undertaking an approved placement are covered by the University’s insurance policies.

How to apply

Students are required to submit an expression of interest for work placement. Please note that organising a placement takes time. Students need to submit an expression of interest form well in advance of your Semester or Session.
