Recommended personal computer specifications
Students may have different computer and software requirements depending on the program being studied.
We understand that every student has a different budget, however it may be wise to avoid unknown (cheaper) brands. Whichever device you look at buying, it's a good idea to do some research online to see what owners of the device actually say about it. This can help you avoid buying something that isn't the best option for you or of poor quality. A simple google search should help you find some information.
The below information provides general guidelines and minimum requirements if you are looking to buy a new device.
Type of device
It is an advantage to have access to a desktop computer, laptop or tablet while studying. Many students use a laptop as it is easily transferable so you can bring it to campus and use at home. You can connect a laptop or tablet to the free wi-fi on campus. If you have a desktop computer at home you can use one of the USC computers in the Library (Sippy Downs campus) or in the computer labs. Keep in mind there may not always be a USC computer available when you want to use one.
Operating system
It is recommended that all students have a device that is running either Windows 10 or later, Mac OS 10.12 or later, or a recent version of Linux.
Hardware minimums
- An Intel I5 processor or above (or an AMD equivalent).
- 16GB of RAM.
- Mobile devices: an 802.11g (or 802.11ac) Wi-Fi adapter (for wireless access on campus).
Software
All students get a free copy of Microsoft Office 365 included as part of their enrolment and it can be installed on many different types of devices. View instructions on how to download your student copy of Microsoft Office.
