Emergency internal threat procedure

For all campus emergencies call 5430 1168 or Ext 1168.

If required, DIAL 000 for Emergency Services.

Internal emergency action
  1. Quickly assess the situation.
  2. Raise the alarm by calling SafeUniSC Security Ext 1168 or 5430 1168.
  3. Follow directions of SafeUniSC Security personnel.
  4. Assist and guide other people away from the area, if safe to do so.
  5. Take care not to move people from safety to danger.
  6. Administer first aid if appropriately trained to do so.
  7. Follow the standard procedures listed below for the type of emergency.
Power failure
  • If practicable, and only if safe to do so, secure any activity or process that many become hazardous or suffer damage if left unattended as a consequence of a power failure.
  • On instruction of ECO* personnel to evacuate the building, immediately cease all activity and secure personal valuables.
  • Assist any person in immediate danger (only if safe to do so).
  • Act in accordance with directions given by ECO* personnel and evacuate the building to the nominated Evacuation Assembly Area and assist with the evacuation of disabled occupants.
  • Limit use of mobile telephones and encourage others to do the same.
  • Assist with the general evacuation if directed to do so by the ECO* personnel.
  • Move calmly to the nominated Evacuation Assembly Area, and do not leave the Evacuation Assembly Area until the 'All Clear' has been given, or other relevant instructions issued.
Hazardous substance spill/leak
  • DO NOT touch suspect material or put yourself at risk.
  • Remove anyone in immediate danger (only if safe to do so).
  • DO NOT allow other people in the area.
  • Contact SafeUniSC Security Ext 1168 or 5430 1168.
  • Set up an isolation area appropriate to the nature of the spill.
  • If applicable, commence hazardous substance spill/leak procedure.
Biological agent release
  • Do not disturb item.
  • If spilt, do not try to clean it up or brush it from clothing.
  • Contact SafeUniSC Security Ext 1168 or 5430 1168.
  • If applicable, commence biohazardous spill/leak procedure.
  • Prevent other people from entering the area.
  • Stay where you are – help will come to you.
