Flexible work options

UniSC recognises that staff members have personal responsibilities outside the workplace and have a range of flexible work arrangements available to support staff in maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Part-time working arrangement

A staff member may request a temporary change to their employment fraction (for example from full-time to part-time) so that they are able to work a different number of hours. When a staff member enters into a part-time working arrangement, salary, leave accruals and other entitlements and benefits will, in general, apply on a pro-rata basis. The variation to employment fraction is for a specific period of time, at which point the arrangement can either be reviewed or cancelled.

Job sharing

Job sharing is a form of part-time work where a single position is shared between two or more staff members, with the position’s duties and responsibilities are divided between the staff members. Job sharing is a voluntary arrangement, usually at the same level but not necessarily the same salary increment. Staff sharing a job can work alternative days or weeks, on the same days or weeks, or other arrangements that meet the operational requirements of the work area.

Flexible work hours for professional staff

The Flexible Working Arrangements Guidelines provides staff with the opportunity and flexibility to achieve a better balance between their personal and working lives. The arrangement allows for staff to accrue 'flex-time', during a 4-week work cycle that can then be taken as time off work without loss of pay at a later date.

Purchased leave

Under the Enterprise Agreement, Flexibility Term clause, staff can apply to purchase up to four weeks additional recreation leave per year.

Variety of leave options

UniSC offers a range of leave options for staff including:

  • Recreation leave
  • Sick leave
  • Parental leave
  • Carers leave
  • Leave without pay
  • Special leave
  • Bereavement / compassionate leave
  • Domestic and Family Violence leave
Working from home

The opportunity to work from home is available to both Academic and Professional staff, although work from home can only occur by formal agreement between the University and a staff member. Any work from home arrangement must be in accordance with the Working from Home Guidelines and our duty to provide a safe and healthy work environment remains unchanged even if staff work from home.

Children on campus

The Children on Campus Policy outlines the conditions under which children are permitted to be on UniSC premises, recognising that there will be occasions when it may be necessary for children to accompany their parent/carer on campus.

Pre-retirement contracts

Pre-retirement flexibility arrangements and contracts can be requested by a staff member to vary their employment arrangements in the lead up to retirement.
