USC offers free two-day tertiary taster

USC is offering a free university skills course at all campuses as a first step for adults considering tertiary study.

The two-day University Skills for You course is an opportunity for those who did not finish high school to sample higher education and provides a study refresher for others who may not have formally studied for many years.

Coordinator Liz Davison said the focus was on upgrading academic skills and helping adults approach tertiary education with confidence, regardless of their age or educational level.

“It is a no-obligation, free taste of the uni experience that is designed to remove some of the barriers people may have about coming on to campus to explore their higher education and career options,” she said.

“A key part of this will be showing people how to recognise and utilise some of the transferable skills they have already gained from work and life experience, such as critical thinking and communication,” Ms Davison said.

USC will hold the Uni Skills for You course at Fraser Coast campus on 15-16 June, Gympie campus on 21-22 June, Sunshine Coast campus on 24-25 June, Caboolture campus on 12-13 July and Moreton Bay campus on 14-15 July.

USC’s Indigenous Services will help run additional Uni Skills workshops for members of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community on 17-18 June at Fraser Coast, 10-11 August at Sunshine Coast and 14-15 September at Caboolture.

The courses are facilitated by experienced USC advisers, who will introduce participants to some of the essential tools needed to tackle tertiary-level study, including academic writing and researching.

At the end of the course, participants will explore potential study pathways and can arrange to have individual sessions with USC career advisers to help develop study and career plans.

Workbooks are provided for free and there are no tuition fees. Places are limited and registration is essential. Register here.
