USC’s Art Gallery will soon host a two-day public forum featuring a Japanese print art expert to coincide with the opening of a stunning exhibition of Japanese and Australian print art at Caloundra Regional Gallery.

Professor Atsuhiko Musashi of Kyoto Seika University in Japan will deliver a keynote presentation at the USC’s Lecture Theatre 7 at 10am on Saturday 21 September on the work of renowned Japanese print artist Akira Kurosaki.

Dr Jan Hogan of the University of Tasmania will deliver Sunday’s keynote address at 10am, reflecting on the cultural flow between Japan and Australia and how this leads to new modes of thinking and poetics in printmaking.

USC Art Gallery Manager Megan Williams said it was an honour for the gallery to host the occasion, titled A Meeting of Cultures: Japan and Australia Print Symposium.

“This symposium will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of issues, ideas and research from the printmaking sphere by bringing together scholars, artists and representatives from cultural institutions,” Ms Williams said.

“It is open to anyone interested in finding out more about printmaking.”

The symposium will be presented by the USC Art Gallery and the Print Council of Australia through the support of Sunshine Coast Council, the Regional Arts Development Fund, the Australia-Japan Foundation, Kyoto Hanga Print Exhibition Executive Committee, Argon Law and the Consulate-General of Japan in Brisbane.

The symposium also coincides with the Kyoto Hanga International Print Exhibition: Japan and Australia 2019 at Caloundra Regional Gallery.

This exhibition showcases the diversity and dynamism of printmaking in all its forms from Australia and Japan and includes an extensive program of printmaking workshops.
