Margate graduate happy to join care sector

A USC Nursing graduate from Margate is thrilled to have found a job caring for the older generation that she says has contributed so much to her community.

Grace Gitau, originally from Kenya, graduated recently with a Bachelor of Nursing Science and now has a job as a Registered Nurse at aged care provider Beaumont Care.

The 30-year-old is thrilled to now be giving back to older people through her nursing skills.

“These are people who have given to our community and now as they age we have a duty of care to give back the best we can by enhancing their quality of life in a respectful and professional manner,” said Grace who previously worked in the insurance industry.

She said her degree had enabled her to develop the skills and confidence to work in a team, collaborate and take decisive action.

“My study has given me the critical thinking skills, communication skills, analytical skills and confidence to be a team player,” Grace said.

“My critical thinking skills enable me to assess patient symptoms, pain and health status and determine what action to take.

“Communication skills are also important because I’m constantly interacting with residents and their families. I must not forget to carry my smile and empathy to work. It gives me a fundamental opportunity to build rapport with my colleagues, those I care for and their families.”

Grace said she chose USC because she knew having a family member also studying at the University would help make it a smooth transition.

“My family member told me how much learning and adjustment support she had received as a new and international student,” Grace said.

“I especially enjoyed the group assignments as they encouraged the need for teamwork and were a great opportunity to interact with fellow classmates and make new friends.”
