Estelle has mind set on USC Moreton Bay degree

A stay-at-home mother who works within a family-run construction business will celebrate her “next phase of life” as a USC Moreton Bay Honours student when she turns 30 in early 2020.

Estelle Osmak, who helps run Narangba-based company Ausure Building Group, said she aimed to complete a university degree to fulfil a long-held goal and set an example for her two daughters and son.

Estelle, 29, of Upper Caboolture, has received an early offer to study a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at USC Moreton Bay in Semester 1, 2020.

Australia’s newest university campus, adjoining Petrie Train Station, will offer almost 50 degrees in its first year, including business, education, psychology, computer science and mechatronic engineering.

Estelle said she was all set for university study when she finished at Wavell Heights State High School a dozen years ago with an OP9, but then “life happened”.

“I started a law and psychology degree at university in Carseldine but I was working full-time and felt fatigued and burnt out after the pressure of Year 12,” she said.

“On reflection, I had all these choices but little guidance. My parents hadn’t gone to uni. I pulled out of the degree and always regretted it.”

She later returned to study but stopped midway through a nursing degree.

“Then I had three kids, and my husband and I were really busy with our business, so I never went back,” she said. “Hopefully, this is a new season for me.”

Estelle runs the office at Ausure’s Narangba depot and said the timing and convenience of USC opening a campus at Petrie perfectly suited her current circumstances.

“It’s just worked out for 2020. The location of the campus is fantastic for our schedule and the school drop-offs and pick-ups at North Lakes.

“The option of studying part-time is something I will be considering as it will suit the demanding schedule that all stay-at-home working mothers experience.

“As a mother, I feel it is essential to set an example for my children, particularly my daughters, about the importance of achieving a higher education.”

Estelle said she expected to enjoy her psychology studies because she loved communicating with people.

“Maybe down the track I could have a psychology career,” she said. “But at the moment, I hope to utilise the insights from the degree for our future business endeavours.”

USC Moreton Bay will open in early 2020 with a state-of-the-art foundation building that includes a full suite of university services. The three-storey multi-purpose building is the first stage of development of the university precinct that is expected to attract 10,000 students enrolled in more than 100 programs by 2030.

Applications to study at USC Moreton Bay are open online.
