While tossing up between becoming a teacher, doctor or firefighter, local Year 5 students were inspired to consider new career paths when they visited the Explore Pathways Expo at USC’s Sunshine Coast campus on Friday 23 November.

More than 200 students from across the region spent the morning immersed in hands-on career activities at various locations across campus based on the themes of adventure and discovery.

Prior to the event, students engaged in online lessons at their schools to use their imaginations to create their ideal community, while discovering their own skills and interests.

USC’s Manager of Student Access and Diversity Veronica Sanmarco said the Explore Pathways Expo allowed students to experience a range of occupations, including career paths they may not have considered yet.

“Research reveals that children’s career aspirations are often based on outdated gender stereotypes which can limit their potential,” she said.

“Primary school is a time when many students start developing ideas about their future, and this chance to discover what it is like to work in different jobs can open their minds to the variety of study and career options available.”

Careers showcased by exhibitors from USC, TAFE and other organisations provided students a fun and interactive experience in fields such as music, nursing, mechanics, creative writing, science and animal ecology.

The Explore Pathway Program is funded through the Federal Government’s Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program to build aspirations towards higher education.
