Strong start for Shantelle in OT career

Shantelle Edwards of Deception Bay has graduated from the University of the Sunshine Coast with a Bachelor of Occupation Therapy (Honours).

Shantelle, 22, is now working as an occupational therapist with leading allied healthcare provider HealthStrong, which contracts staff to aged-care facilities or community groups as required.

The former Dakabin State High School student said her employer was impressed by the practical experience she had gained while studying at USC.

“HealthStrong loved that I had plenty of hands-on experience at hospitals,” she said. “The practical placements I did at USC gave me a lot of insight into how to help clients who have specific needs.”

“For instance, for my final-year university project I worked with two other students to create a modified paediatric shower chair to help mothers bathing children with disabilities in low-income countries,” she said.

“It was a real eye opener. From choosing materials suitable to use in places like Vietnam, to coordinating with stakeholders – everything rested on our shoulders. It was an invaluable experience.

“USC taught us to be ready for anything, to think outside the box and maintain a strong client-centric outlook.’’

Shantelle said that along with USC’s high-quality teaching, the University’s relaxed atmosphere had been a strong drawcard.

“It was very comfortable compared to studying in the city,” she said. “USC was easy to navigate around, so I felt a lot calmer there.”

Applications are now open for mid-year entry to study at USC, with Semester 2 starting on 23 July. Details on how to apply can be found here.

USC’s annual Open Day at its main Sunshine Coast campus will be held on Sunday 22 July and at its Caboolture campus on Sunday 5 August.
