USC graduate Bikram Singh of India is well on his way to becoming a software developer after gaining employment as a testing analyst with an Australian software company.

After completing a Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology mid-year, Bikram immediately started work with Point Duty at USC’s Innovation Centre before being relocated to the company’s Tasmania headquarters recently.

Point Duty creates a range of software, like ‘Threat Hunter’, that is used by law enforcement and military personnel in their collection of data, such as images and information about persons of interest.

“Once the company makes software, my role is to check it to ensure it matches the requirements and that it functions properly and safely,” Bikram said.

“The best thing about it is I get to work with software developers, learning how to write great code, which will help so much in becoming a developer.

“That is the future of jobs. If you know coding and have good program knowledge you can get a job virtually anywhere in the world.”

Bikram said he had developed a solid understanding of software through his studies at USC, particularly through subjects like Database Design and Systems Analysis and Design.

Point Duty CEO Stan Kaine said he hired Bikram because of his software knowledge and skills, as well as displaying a great work ethic.

“Bikram started with us in early June and has been a great addition to the team,” Mr Kaine said.

USC Lecturer in Information Technology Dr Jacqui Blake congratulated Bikram on his success.

“This is a terrific outcome for Bikram who worked hard to juggle his study and work commitments,” she said.

“In his final year of study, he learnt how to translate some of that technical knowledge into applied knowledge and now can understand how it’s applied in the real world.”
