Fun and festivities for USC’s Diversity Week

The USC campus at Sippy Downs will be abuzz with colourful community events as it celebrates Diversity Week 2017 from Monday 21 August.

Under the theme ‘I belong, you belong, we all belong’, USC will host a week-long program of activities open to the public, including free movie screenings, photo exhibitions, drumming and dance workshops, intercultural lunches and a trivia night.

The week will begin with the annual Diversity Week Breakfast, which is held to recognise individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to diversity and inclusion.

The breakfast on Monday at USC’s Innovation Centre auditorium will include a keynote address from the Right Reverend Jeremy Greaves. He is the Bishop for the Northern region of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane, and a passionate advocate for interfaith dialogue and social justice issues.

Monday will also see USC stage a public screening of the critically acclaimed refugee documentaryConstance on the Edge’ from 5pm on the Building B lawn.

On Tuesday 22 August, a Diversity Week Market Day on campus will feature stalls, fun activities, workshops, international food and live music performances from 10am-2pm.

USC’s Frank About Art student group will host an African drumming and dance workshop from 10am-12.30pm in the Art Gallery Courtyard that day.

Other Diversity Week events include:

  • Tuesday 22 August, 5.30-9pm: ‘Depths of Diversity’ trivia night – USC Student Guild building
  • Wednesday 23 August, 7-8.30pm: Diversity panel discussion hosted by USC Law Student Association – Innovation Centre
  • Thursday 24 August, 11am-12.45pm: ‘Reverse inclusion’ wheelchair basketball workshop: 11am – USC Sport Stadium
  • Thursday 24 August, 4-7pm: Workplace diversity panel and networking event – Innovation Centre
  • Friday 25 August, 11am-12.45pm: Discussion forum on human trafficking – Lecture Theatre 5

Diversity Week events are also being held at USC’s Fraser Coast, South Bank and Gympie campuses. The full program of events for all campuses can be found on the USC website.

USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said Diversity Week was a chance to celebrate the wide variety of people and groups who contributed to the USC community.

“Diversity enriches our personal, professional, academic and social lives,” he said. “Principles of diversity and equity are at the heart of what we stand for as a university.”
