Julie Bishop delivers Memorial Lecture at USC

Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop addressed an audience of more than 270 people at the University of the Sunshine Coast last night (Wednesday 25 May) as she delivered the annual Geoff Shadforth Memorial Lecture.

The Foreign Minister and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party discussed the changing demographics of Asian nations and the opportunities for Australian businesses to benefit from the region’s evolving economic environment.

The lecture is held annually in honour of Shadforths Civil Contractors co-director Geoff Shadforth, who died in 2013, and is aimed at continuing Geoff’s passion for creating growth and opportunities for the Sunshine Coast.

Ms Bishop, who opened the USC Sports Stadium as Minister for Education in 2007, thanked USC for its very positive collaborations with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

She noted that the dynamism of many Asian countries was opening up new avenues for trade, particularly in the areas of agriculture and services.

“While different countries in Asia have enjoyed rapid economic growth since the 1950s, there’s still a long way for the region to go, and Australia is exquisitely positioned to benefit,” she said.

“Think of the potential growth yet to happen right on our doorstep. This is a historic opportunity for Australia.”

Ms Bishop met with members of the Shadforth family ahead of her address, which was held at USC’s Innovation Centre Auditorium.

The lecture was also attended Member for Longman and Assistant Minister for Innovation Wyatt Roy.
