Hollywood screenwriter to provide USC lecture

Aspiring screenwriters will have the opportunity to gain first-hand insights into the film industry from an international writer and producer at an open lecture at the University of the Sunshine Coast next week.

Brisbane screenwriter Shayne Armstrong will present at the final lecture of USC’s Introduction to Screenwriting course on Friday 3 June at 11am in Lecture Theatre 7.

Mr Armstrong has recently returned from Los Angeles where he was promoting his newly released supernatural horror film, The Darkness, directed by Greg McLean (Wolf Creek, 2005) and starring Kevin Bacon.

Lecturer in Screenwriting Rebecca Belfield-Kennedy said USC’s Creative Industries program was committed to inviting professionals to share their experiences with students and provide first-hand, up-to-date information about changes in the industry.

“People attending the lecture will have the opportunity to ask Shayne about genre filmmaking, how he got started as a screenwriter and hear his advice about getting your foot in the door as a young filmmaker in the Australian and US film industry,” she said.

“When students meet filmmakers and have the opportunity to talk to them and ask questions, it demystifies the filmmaking process and makes their dreams and aspirations seem more real and attainable.

“Inspiring our students is what it’s all about,” she said.
