Top order Harlequins batsman Owen Dugdale of Southside, Gympie, clearly feels just as comfortable in a study hall as he does out on the sports field.

After gaining an OP1 last year, the St Patrick’s College graduate enrolled in a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science at the University of the Sunshine Coast and started classes at Sippy Downs this week.

In recognition of his high achievements as a student, Owen was awarded a USC Vice-Chancellor’s Merit Scholarship of $12,000.

The 17-year-old has been batting at number three for Harlequins this season, plays touch in the Gympie men’s and mixed competitions, has represented Wide Bay in rugby league and touch and has a keen interest in many other sports.

“At school I played most of the sports that were offered, including hockey and rugby union,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to learning about all the biomechanics that play a part in sport and in exercise in general.

“I had heard very good things about USC from other people who’ve studied there. I also had a look around the facilities and they looked pretty good.”

Owen, who was the Rice House captain at St Patrick’s last year, excelled in subjects like chemistry and physics and is eager to get on the front foot with the science subjects of his degree.

He is one of almost 4,700 new students starting at the University of the Sunshine Coast this semester.
