$20,000 scholarship for USC Fraser Coast student

Former Hervey Bay State High School captain Monica Boulton has been awarded a prestigious University of the Sunshine Coast Chancellor’s Scholarship.

The aspiring surgeon, who gained an OP2 last year, said the $20,000 scholarship for academic excellence would allow her the financial freedom to focus on a Bachelor of Nursing Science which she started this semester at USC Fraser Coast.

“I have always wanted to work in the medical field and this scholarship is a wonderful financial boost that will help me achieve this goal,” Monica said.

The USC Chancellor’s Scholarship is awarded each year to two first-year students in recognition of their outstanding academic success and active role in community activities.

Monica said she was loving her first experience of university life and Nursing Science.

“Starting a Bachelor of Nursing Science has definitely confirmed that this is what I want to do,” Monica said.

“I am particularly embracing the practical, hands-on aspect of the study program and I know it is going to be a very valuable degree for me as I chase my dream of becoming a surgeon.

“My ultimate goal is to work in a fast-paced hospital environment where I can make a difference and save lives.”

While at USC, Monica intends to continue the active role she played in community service during her high school years.

“Last year I raised money for the Council Cancer and Leukaemia Foundation, as well as completing the 96km Kokoda Challenge for charity, and I hope to do similar fundraising activities this year, particularly Relay for Life.”
