Urangan pastry chef Dee-Anne Hoffman, 43, is among 160 new students who have enrolled to start studying at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Fraser Coast campus this semester.

Mrs Hoffman, who has signed up for a Bachelor of Primary Education, will be among the crowd at USC’s Orientation Day tomorrow (Thursday 21 July) enjoying a full program of live music, entertainment, markets, workshops, information sessions and campus tours.

Mrs Hoffman said everything fell into place for her when USC arrived at the Fraser Coast campus earlier this year, with its focus on face-to-face learning.

“It has been 20 years before I could start tertiary study because motherhood came first in what has been a long but rewarding road,” Mrs Hoffman said.

“I was impressed by USC’s emphasis on students working with other students and teachers in person and that is exactly why I have chosen to be here.

“I knew I didn’t want to study online at home as I need face-to-face communication with people just to ensure that I am on the right path. So this is the perfect opportunity for me.”

USC’s Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Birgit Lohmann said the 160 new students would join more than 300 who are currently enrolled at USC Fraser Coast.

“Now is a great time to be starting at USC Fraser Coast as we continue to enhance the quality learning and the study choices available,” Professor Lohmann said.

She said tomorrow’s Orientation Day would equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare for Semester 2, which begins next week.

The fun, social side of university will also be on show, with live music by Sam Maddison, market stalls, free food, candle-making and other games and activities.

The new students have enrolled in degrees including Nursing Science, Marketing, Accounting, Human Services and Primary Education, and USC’s free university bridging program, Tertiary Preparation Pathway.
