In just five months, University of the Sunshine Coast student Cian Yang has gone from almost “chickening out” of university to becoming a superhero.

The Psychology/Drama student, 19, is one of eight students who underwent superhero transformations, based on their strengths and interests, in readiness for USC’s Imaginarium and Open Day on Sunday 7 August.

Cian, who is from Taiwan, said her natural shyness and apprehension about meeting people had nearly stopped her from applying to study.

However, her first semester had been such a transformative experience that she decided to sign up for a superhero makeover to help promote the annual USC family fun day and information event for prospective students.

“I was really nervous and didn’t know what student life would be like,” Cian said. “But I came here and I was just instantly surrounded with friendly, supportive people. I felt at home straight away.

“Even before I arrived, I got a call from someone at USC checking if I needed any help before I started studying.

“I feel so much more confident now, and that’s what made me take the opportunity to do the superhero transformation. It felt amazing to design and become this new character.”

Cian’s superhero identity was based on her strength in connecting with other people and the photoshoot incorporated elements of her native Taiwanese culture, including her collection of fans. See usc.edu.au/heroes to watch Cian’s transformation.

Cian said she couldn’t wait to undergo the super-powered makeover again for Imaginarium, at which at which community members will be urged to consider how their individual strengths might become “super-powers” through education, and to dress up as superheroes themselves.

“Becoming a superhero was about more than hair and makeup,” she said.

“I could see how everyone changed during the transformation – it was this incredible confidence boost, like we could do anything.

“It would be great if I could help inspire people who are unsure about studying.”
