P-plate drivers will get the chance to test their skills in a road environment simulator at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Sippy Downs campus to contribute to latest safety research by senior academic Dr Bridie Scott-Parker.

The Leader of USC’s Adolescent Risk Research Unit is conducting the study, which includes filling out brief surveys, to compare the driving perspectives of parents and young people.

“Young driver road safety is a priority in Australia, and especially here on the Sunshine Coast,” said Dr Scott-Parker, who has a PhD in Psychology.

“We know that driving during the time you display red P plates is very dangerous, and much of my research focuses on how to reduce this crash risk.

“This study will help us learn about what increases risk, and also what decreases it.”

The study requires about 60 drivers aged between 17 and 24 years old who have Provisional 1 (red P-plate) licences. Participants will receive a gift voucher after providing an hour of their time.
