While the rate of young adults volunteering is lower than most other age groups across Australia, an innovative campaign by the University of the Sunshine Coast could see this change significantly on the Fraser Coast.

University Careers and Graduate Employment Adviser Tracy-Madonna Wylie said USC Fraser Coast wanted to hear from regional organisations interested in providing volunteering opportunities for its students.

“We have over 400 students at our Fraser Coast campus and we are encouraging them to make a difference to their community and at the same time enhance their skills, confidence and employability through volunteering,” Ms Wylie said.

As part of the campaign, USC Fraser Coast will hold a special event on campus tomorrow (Wednesday 10 August) from 11am-1pm during National Student Volunteer Week.

Activities include a ‘Volunteering Wall’ to help students match their skills and interests with a suitable program or organisation in the Fraser Coast.

“The event is also about letting community groups know that our USC students are a valuable resource that they can tap into to help build capacity within their organisation,” Ms Wylie said.

“For example, our Bachelor of Sports Studies students may be able to help those planning family fun days or sporting events, while our marketing and business students might be able to assist organisations with promotion and finance.

“Volunteering opens students up to new experiences and responsibilities that can improve their employment options when they graduate. And it can make them feel good about themselves,” she said.

National Student Volunteer Week is led by universities and schools across Australia to encourage and celebrate student volunteers.

Research from Volunteering Australia suggests the rate of volunteering among 18-24 year-olds remained lower than other age groups, but was increasing.
