The opportunity to work on a small product event for international supermodel Miranda Kerr’s skincare line was a defining moment for University of the Sunshine Coast student Kaitlin Greenough.

“From then on I was hooked on pursuing a career in tourism and events,” said Kaitlin, 25, who can add a host of events to her resume since enrolling in a Bachelor of Tourism, Leisure and Events Management at USC’s SouthBank campus.

“In my first semester at USC in 2014, I interned for Ecotourism Australia, then worked in Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Event Department for 18 months, helping to plan and deliver major festivals and events,” she said.

“I now work for USC SouthBank on great student-based events such as Orientation and I am also currently undertaking a tourism internship in digital marketing.”

Originally from Nova Scotia in Canada and now living in Brisbane’s north, Kaitlin said she realised her passion for the industry while working at a pharmacy in her early 20s.

“Through my job in pharmacy, I had the opportunity to work with the then CEO and brand development manager of Miranda Kerr’s skincare range on two product events,” she said.

The experience inspired Kaitlin to study a Diploma of Events at TAFE before gaining pathway entry into the Tourism, Leisure and Events Management degree at USC SouthBank.

“My lecturers from USC are incredible. Their passion for events and tourism is contagious and they create an environment that motivates you to get out there and give 100 percent in everything you do,” she said.

Kaitlin said the small class sizes at USC SouthBank allowed more one-on-one support as well as the opportunity for guest lectures from leaders in the industry.

“I thoroughly enjoy my degree and I love working in an industry that creates happiness and memorable experiences for others – it’s extremely fulfilling.”

Another highlight was studying at a multi-cultural campus in the heart of Brisbane’s arts and entertainment precinct, said Kaitlin, who moved to Australia nine years ago.

“It’s easy to get to, the campus is vibrant and modern and there’s always something happening in the Parklands too, so after classes it’s a fun place to explore.”
