A stunning collection of visual art by regional secondary school students will open at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery on Thursday 25 August at 6.30pm.

The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art – Regional Exhibition 2016 recognises and promotes excellence in senior visual arts education and student achievement in visual art throughout Queensland’s state and non-state high schools.

Gallery Manager Lou Jaeger said the exhibition included 60 works produced by students from 30 different secondary schools in the North Coast education region (from Pine Rivers to Cooroy) as part of their senior visual art curriculum during 2016.

Ms Jaeger said that for most of the students involved, this would be the first time their artwork is presented in a professional gallery environment.

“To be selected for this exhibition held here at the University Gallery might help them to decide on a creative career path after Year 12,” she said. “It is always exciting to be part of a young artist’s career and the variety and standard of creativity is always excellent.”

Ms Jaeger said the USC Gallery has presented this exhibition for more than 10 years, building relationships with schools, teachers and students.

“The exhibition opening is a fantastic event with proud families and friends present and a great vibe on the night,” she said.

“The exhibition helps raise community awareness about the degree of sophistication in concepts, diversity of technical competence, and the high standard of arts education in Queensland secondary schools.”

To add to the excitement of the opening event, the North Coast regional award recipients will be announced. These awards include excellence, commendation and regional encouragement, and the winners’ works will be exhibited at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane next year.

The exhibition is presented in association with the Queensland Government Department of Education, Training and Employment and Oxlades Art Supplies. It will run until Saturday 10 September and school groups are encouraged to visit.

The gallery is located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs. It is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.
