Ensuring the Fraser Coast has the best health care possible is a top focus for a University of the Sunshine Coast lecturer who leads an innovative program for the region’s health care workers and students.

Senior Lecturer in Nursing Julie Martyn, is the chair of the Fraser Coast Local Education and Research Nexus, known as LEARN.

LEARN was established by a group of local health professionals who work together to provide a dedicated educational program to enhance the knowledge and skills of those working in health-related areas.

“LEARN fills a void by providing available, affordable and relevant continuing education, which is not usually available for health professionals in a regional area,” said Ms Martyn.

“I’m passionate about LEARN because I am passionate about creating a community where collaboration builds social wealth.”

Meetings are held fortnightly at USC Fraser Coast and are open to students, health practitioners and interested members of the community.

“From working through trauma, to ethics in health care, this program is dynamic and diverse to meet the specific and changing needs of the health care community across the region,” Ms Martyn said.

“The program’s most valuable contribution is that it provides an opportunity for students and practitioners from so many health disciplines to interact and share their different insights, experiences and learnings.”

Ms Martyn said the LEARN committee included social workers, nurses, doctors, allied health practitioners, public and private health sector managers, and a paramedical representative.

“The program this year is a perfect example of collaboration in action.

“With these representatives on the committee, LEARN is able to access the professional development and expertise within these sectors to support interdisciplinary learning for all interested health professionals.”

The next LEARN session will be held at USC Fraser Coast on Tuesday 12 April, from 5.15pm-7.15pm and will cover the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). For more details email jmartyn@usc.edu.au
