Bribie Island graduate starts work as Occupational Therapist

A University of the Sunshine Coast graduate has become the first occupational therapist to be employed by a major aged care provider on Bribie Island.

Amy Neumann of Sandstone Point has started work at the not-for-profit Churches of Christ Aged Care Service where she completed a placement in the second year of her Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at USC.

The former Bribie Island State High School student, who received her degree at a graduation ceremony on 7 April, works with elderly people to enhance their involvement in day-to-day activities.

Amy, 22, said she was thrilled to have been offered her first professional position as an occupational therapist before she had even officially graduated.

“I love working in aged care and the local community and aim to enable people of all ages to participate in the things that they need and want to do,” she said.

“My university placements really helped shape what my future career entailed as well as challenging me at times.

“I received a lot of great feedback from placement supervisors who were really happy to have USC students as the students held a real passion for the field of occupational therapy.”

Initially choosing to study at USC for its proximity to her home on Bribie Island, Amy said she had loved being able to engage in hands-on work experience from early on in her studies.

“I think that a great part of the degree is the fieldwork,” she said. “Having opportunities for student placements from day dot really brings out each individual.

“I certainly found it to be a confidence booster when entering the workforce.”

Applications are now open for mid-year entry for a range of programs at USC. For more information, visit www.usc.edu.au/learn.
