Helping people is a life goal for new USC student

A strong desire to help people and make a real difference in their lives has motivated Tayla Dokonal, 18, of Currimundi to enrol in a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at USC.

The Unity College OP2 graduate was inspired to pursue a career in psychology after working as a volunteer for Rosies Friends on the Street, an organisation that provides food, friendship and support to people in need on the streets of Caloundra.

Work experience at the Maroochydore Disability Service Centre in Year 10 also gave Tayla a chance to meet psychologists and gain a better understanding of some of the important work they do.

“For me, working in this field is not just a future career goal but a life goal – being able to show care and compassion and help people,” she said.

“I chose to study Psychology because I’ve always been really interested in how the mind works. I’m particularly interested in working in the area of youth and family psychology.”

Tayla is the first member of her family to attend university and is excited about studying locally.

“I’m so glad to be going to USC because it means I can stay living at home and really focus on my studies instead of having to work to pay rent somewhere,” she said.

“I also chose USC because I’d heard lots of good things about it – the modern facilities and friendly teachers – and I’d been there for school excursions and really liked the environment.”

At Unity College, Tayla was in the Senior A debating team in Year 10 and Year 12 and topped the school in English and Religion last year.

An estimated 3,900 new students will begin studying at USC this semester, with Orientation Week to be held from 23-27 February before classes begin on 2 March.
