The UniSC Clinical Board has been established as a management committee covering a range of strategic and management matters to support the UniSC Executive in setting the direction of the University’s clinics and health engagement activities.

Purpose

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and the Foundation Dean of Health have responsibility for ensuring that clinical health engagement activities are managed and governed effectively across the University; are consistent across disciplines; provide rich experiences for students and staff; and, are financially viable, sustainable and compliant with legislative, regulatory and policy requirements.

The scope of activities covered by the UniSC Clinical Board will include discipline-specific public clinics providing students with practical experience, work integrated learning activities within a supervised clinical setting, clinical trials and clinical research, executive education within the health sector and those clinics operated in association with external providers.

The Clinical Board addresses the need for appropriate organisation wide clinical governance for UniSC's health service related activities. The Terms of Reference acknowledge that as an inherent part of its educational program UniSC operates or is associated with the conduct and provision of clinics that provide health or health related services or functions.

Clinical Governance Framework

The Board’s first significant output was the Clinical Governance Framework that addresses the important issues of patient safety, ongoing quality improvement, clinical performance and scope of practice and engagement with consumers. The Framework also covers clinics the UniSC is associated with but that are operated by a third party. The ongoing focus of the Clinical Board is one of oversight of the delivery of these activities in accordance with the Clinical Governance Framework.

The Board does not operate or manage the clinics, that is the responsibility of the respective Schools and the leadership of the UniSC Clinical Trials Centre and the Thompson Institute.

Reporting

The Clinical Board reports to the UniSC Executive.
