Campus safety

SafeUSC community team

SafeUSC Officers (security) are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergency situations or if you require assistance.

SafeUSC operations centre is located in Building J, Ground floor of the USC Sunshine Coast campus. There are SafeUSC Community Officers on all USC campuses and at the Thompson Institute.

  • The campuses are monitored by CCTV and SafeUSC Officers patrol the campus
  • Located at key points around each campus are emergency call points, connecting you straight to SafeUSC Officers
  • A telephone located outside the main entrance of the Facilities Management office at the Sunshine Coast campus connects directly to SafeUSC
  • Ask the SafeUSC team for assistance at any time. SafeUSC escorts are available to accompany you to anywhere within the campus – particularly at night – by telephoning 5430 1168 (or extension 1168) or by using the SafeZone app
  • In the event of an emergency dial 000
  • All SafeUSC Officers are qualified Senior First Aid Officers
  • All SafeUSC Officers wear personal body cameras. Your interactions with SafeUSC Officers may be recorded

SafeZone app

USC uses SafeZone to manage emergency response and communications during incidents on campus.

The app connects you with the SafeUSC team or emergency services.

You can use SafeZone to:

  • Call for help
  • Call for first aid
  • Call for emergency assistance
  • Check-in manually or automatically when working alone
  • Receive Campus notifications – if there is an incident on campus that requires you to take action.

USC is committed to a culture of respect and providing a safe and supportive environment for all members of our community. The SafeUSC team encourages everyone at USC to familiarise themselves with the emergency procedures.

For immediate assistance on campus: 

  • Contact SafeUSC on ext. 1168 from a USC phone or call 5430 1168
  • Utilise the SAFEZONE App
  • For non urgent support or concerns Report concerns or seek support.
  • The University of the Sunshine Coast has teamed up with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) to launch Queensland's first Student Watch.
  • This initiative allows USC students to go online to access safety and security information, including crime prevention messages, strategies and links to important associated websites.
  • Student Watch formalises the partnership between USC and Queensland Police and will assist in tackling issues surrounding drugs, alcohol-fuelled violence, parties, safe night precincts, and road safety.
  • USC students are encouraged to subscribe to the student watch blog page to receive weekly updates.
  • Recognise and avoid potentially risky situations.
  • Report any suspicious behaviour.
  • Carry your ID card with you at all times.
  • Be alert and walk purposefully as confidence deters attackers.
  • Carry a personal alarm or be prepared to scream loudly, and run if threatened.
  • Avoid lonely or gloomy places, especially at night—walk with a friend, a SafeUSC Officer, or stay with a crowd in well-lit areas.
  • If someone follows you, go to a place where you know there will be other people.
  • Trust your intuition.
  • When you’re socialising, play smart—one drink too many could make you vulnerable.
  • Always ensure that your personal property is never left unattended, including in the Library.
  • Never ask other persons to mind property in your absence.
  • Any property found or handed to SafeUSC is taken to the Loans Desk on Level 1 of the Library.
  • Know your timetable and avoid long waits at the bus stop, especially if you’re alone.
  • Keep to open, populated areas in full view of the bus and passing traffic.
  • Telephone for taxis 131 008 and, if possible, have someone see you off and keep a note of the taxi number. Sit in the back seat on the opposite side to the driver, and do not disclose any personal information.
  • Park in well-lit, busy areas.
  • Ensure that your vehicle is secured at all times.
  • Never leave personal property visible in your car.
  • Have keys in your hand ready to open the car door and if necessary, use to defend yourself against an attacker.
  • Check the back seat or hatch for intruders before getting into your car.
  • Once inside, lock all doors with windows up.
  • Always carry change, a phone card or a mobile phone.
  • When using a public telephone (located at Buildings I and K), turn your back to the phone and speak looking outwards.
  • If threatened, dial the police 000 or SafeUSC on 5430 1168 or trigger an alert via the SafeZone App.
  • If you carry a mobile phone, program emergency numbers into it for quick access.
  • If you call the police or SafeUSC, be sure to give your name and location.
