Dr Janice Fullerton AO is highly regarded in the library and information services sector and is recognised nationally and internationally for her contribution in the digitisation of, and accessibility to, library collections in Australia. Dr Fullerton’s exemplary public service included 43 years as an employee of the National Library of Australia. Her journey began as a trainee librarian in 1967, becoming Director-General in 1999 and remaining in that position until her retirement in 2010. Dr Fullerton has been awarded an Order of Australia (AO), and the HCL Anderson Award from the Australian Library and Information Association. Her outstanding leadership and innovation ensured the National Library of Australia achieved an increased visibility of collections such as the Treasures Exhibition; the enabling of free access to the national catalogue through the Libraries Australia website; PANDORA — the world renowned digital archive system; Picture Australia — an internet based service which has one and half million images drawn from forty-six collecting institutions. Jan initiated the Australian Newspaper Digitisation Project and the creation of the Trove search service which provides easy online access to the content of thousands of Australian collections. This honorary award recognises Dr Fullerton’s strong links to the Sunshine Coast region where she grew up on a pineapple farm near the Glasshouse Mountains, and received her early education in Beerwah and Nambour before commencing tertiary studies at The University of Queensland.
