Beverley Hand is a Traditional Custodian of the Sunshine Coast region and highly respected elder in the community. Beverley Hand is a dynamic and inspirational individual who has dedicated much of her life to environmental and cultural education, and improving socioeconomic outcomes for community and women. Beverley has been active in enhancing the prominence and status on campus of Indigenous culture, knowledge and studies through: membership of the Vice-Chancellor’s Indigenous Advisory Committee; her role as an adviser in the development of the USC Reconciliation Action Plan; planning and delivery of the annual USC Indigenous Education Symposium from its inception in 2007; her role as the past Secretary of Barung Landcare Association; the re-establishment of the Bunya Festival ‘Bunya Dreaming’; membership of the “Treeline” Steering Committee; involvement in Indigenous Liaison; organising exhibitions of Indigenous artwork across the region; and actively pursuing growth in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student enrolment through her networks with community organisations, schools and TAFE. Beverley has conducted compelling and passionate Welcome to Country addresses at many USC events and Orientation activities and has shared her knowledge of this land and people through a number of workshops at USC events. Beverley regularly conducted ecological knowledge tours of the USC campus, increasing the knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous issues and culture and developing staff and student cross-cultural understandings.
