Dr Sharif A. Mukul is a Senior Research Fellow (adjunct) at the University of the Sunshine Coast (Australia) and an Honorary Research Assistant Professor of Earth and Environment at Florida International University (USA). He is also the founding Director of the Centre for Research on Land-use Sustainability, an online global platform aiming at research, consultancy, and decision-making on land-use related issues in the tropics. Dr Mukul, currently, also is serving as an Associate Editor of four leading journals — Journal of Applied Ecology (British Ecological Society/Wiley), Ecology and Evolution (Wiley), Small-scale Forestry (Springer) and Sustainability (MDPI).

Dr Mukul has a background in forestry, and natural resources and environmental management from Australia (University of Queensland), Denmark (Copenhagen University), Germany (Technical University of Dresden), and Bangladesh (Shahjalal University of Science and Technology). His previous research was on sustainable use, management, and conservation of forests and biodiversity. Currently, he is more enthusiastic about the potential role of forest and other less modified landscapes as an ecological niche, their contribution in ecosystem functioning, and the role of various human activities on their structure and performance.

In his doctoral research titled - 'Shifting cultivation in the upland Philippines: Biodiversity and carbon stock assessment, and ecosystem services trade-offs in land-use decisions', Dr Mukul investigated how tree diversity and selected ecosystem properties (i.e. biomass carbon in trees, dead woods and in fine roots, organic carbon pools in soil) in degraded upland landscapes recover following shifting cultivation - a major tropical land-use and a key driver of deforestation and forest degradation.
