Dr Joseph Scott is a former Secondary Health and Physical Education teacher and is an experienced teacher educator. Dr Scott completed his PhD within the Priority Research Centre in Physical Activity and Nutrition, University of Newcastle. His PhD research focused on the behavioural aspects and optimum protocols for measuring physical activity in adolescents. Dr Scott has extensive experience in assessing physical activity both subjectively (with self-report questionnaires); and objectively (with pedometers and accelerometers) for populations in free-living environments. He has deep knowledge and expertise in the use of research-grade accelerometers including the ActiGraph GTX3+, GT9X-BT and the GENEActiv. His research uses physical activity monitoring devices (such as: pedometers and accelerometers) promote physical activity, accurately measure activity, test randomised control trials and evaluate physical activity interventions to improve the overall health of the young people. He has always been passionate about promoting physical and mental health in children and adolescents and empowering them to lead healthy and active lifestyles.
On completion of his PhD he undertook a Lecturer position at Edith Cowan University’s School of Education where he was Head of Early Childhood and Primary Health and Physical Education. Dr Scott is currently a Lecturer in Curriculum and Pedagogy (Health and Physical Education) at the University of Sunshine Coast within the School of Education and Tertiary Access. Dr Scott’s research continues to focus on multifaceted approaches to promoting the physical and mental health of children and adolescents with particular research interests including: physical activity; mental health, physical literacy; Physical Education (PE) (pedagogy and curriculum); sun safety and nutrition education. His work has been published in high-impact prestigious peer-reviewed international journals such as: European Physical Education Review, Health Promotion Journal of Australia, Journal of Sports Sciences, Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health and Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport. In addition to keynote and symposium presentations, Dr Scott has presented his research at leading national and international conferences in his field. Dr Scott is accredited to supervise both Master’s and PhD research higher degree students.
Dr Scott has strong engagement with community and professional associations and is also President of the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation: Western Australia (ACHPER WA) which is the largest professional association for HPE teachers in WA.
