Dr. Dermody is a gerontologic nursing expert with nearly 20 years of nursing experience. She has taught in the tertiary sector for 10 years. Dr. Dermody is passionate about the development of academic-practice partnerships involving tertiary nursing education and aged care providers to ensure nursing workforce readiness, and delivery of culturally appropriate care that result in quality health outcomes for older adults. Her mix of academic and industry experience gives her an applied approach to her research involving smart homes, artificial intelligence and older adults.
Dr. Dermody’s research focuses on using ageing-in-place technologies (AiPT) such as smart homes to support older adults across the aging and care continuum. She is interested in remote health monitoring to promote safe ageing-in-place of older adults with chronic conditions, frailty and associated functional decline which frequently impact this population. A major line of research inquiry is the use of smart homes with artificial intelligence capabilities to support aging-in-place and the home management of persons with significant chronic disease. This multidisciplinary research is performed in the space between nursing and engineering and under the umbrella of a newly emerging field, Gerontechnology.
