Associate Professor Adem Can is a consultant psychiatrist with a special interest in early interventions, addiction psychiatry and dual diagnosis care.
Adem has been the principle investigator and research psychiatrist for studies on suicidality, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder at USC's Thompson Institute.
Dr Can has interest in academic researching on biological treatment and investigating neurobiological basis of mental illnesses. His research focus has been on novel and rapid acting treatment resistant mental health conditions.
He has extensive clinical and research experience with people who suffer from psychological predicaments working in public and private facilities as well as in research institutions. Although his research is based on biological treatments, he is promoting a holistic biopsychosocial approach in treating mental health conditions.
After graduating from medicine at Ankara University in 1997, he worked as a general practitioner prior to migrating to Australia where he completed the Australian Medical Council (AMC) exams in 2002, qualifying him as a General Registered Medical Practitioner. He completed his psychiatry training mainly on the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
He has teaching experience with medical students, master students and psychiatry trainees.
